| Dallas Winter League Signup Guide |
| There are two divisions -- "fun" and "competitive". |
| Fun division |
| Lots of instruction for people who are new or have only played casual pickup. Captains try to distribute play time evenly. Generally in this league you get a fair chance to play a lot of points and touch the disc. Expect a big improvement in play as the year progresses and people rise on the learning curve. When we split people into two divisions, we push this division to have the highest possible ratio of women to men, goal being to play 4M/3F coed. Side benefit: fun division teams tend to dominate the party scene (can't imagine why that is). |
| Competitive division |
| Expect the look and feel of a team playing in a coed tournament (except it's 5/2 instead of 4/3). Captains are encouraged to "play to win" when it comes to strategy, positional assignments, and relative play time (even to the point of calling subs if they want to). Players are expected to know the basic concepts of stack, zone, forcing, etc. Established club players are likely to dominate offensive play. Based on last year's demographics, women can look forward to tons of play time with only 4 women per team. For men, play time maybe more problematic depending on how signups go. |
| Which one to choose? |
| It's very important that you sign up for the division that suits you best. Once you are drafted, there is no switching. If your choice is crystal clear then all the better. If not, talk to people from both divisions last year and get their opinion, and use either the "prefer" or "either" signup option. |
| "Prefer" option |
| "Prefer" means you are pretty sure you want to be in your preferred division, but there is some possibility you could be persuaded to play in the other division. You will not be switched from your preferred option without notification. If you have specific criteria that might affect your decision to switch (e.g. playtime) please list them as comments. |
| "Either" option |
| The talking heads who run Winter League will place you in one of the divisions. Essentially you are trusting them to evaluate which division will work best for you. Rest assured if they don't know you personally they will find out who you are before deciding, this responsibility is not taken lightly. |
| Pairing up |
| In general, pairing up (insisting on playing on the same team with another player) is discouraged because it complicates the draft procedure. There are some exceptions which will always be honored: |
| - couples with small children that must be cared for at the fields |
| - one of the players is a new player (or both are) |
| If you choose the pairing option during signup, make sure you list the reason. If it isn't one of the reasons above, you can still take a shot but it will likely not be honored. Both players must express the same pairing preference. |
| Where |
| Heaven. OK, not heaven, but it's about as good as it gets. Las Colinas Equestrian
Center (yes, a polo field). It's beautiful, and it's centrally located, so all
you non-Dallasites can get involved (yes, we love you too). It's a 20-25 minute drive from east Dallas. |
| Entry Fee |
| $40 per person. $35 if you're a new player. $25 for Juniors (High School / 18 and under). What you get for your cash: a T-shirt/s,
a disc, reserved fields, 10 Saturdays of Ultimate, a free end-of-season party,
lots of Simpson's silliness, and Port-o-Lets! Nobody makes money off this -
any profits will be put back into Winter League or used for the good of Ultimate
in the Dallas area. |
| Pre-Pay |
| Payment is required before the draft. So register on-line. If you're not in
the draft, you will not be able to play.
We will NOT have a supplemental
draft this year, so register now!!
